Espen stands tall, just an inch under six feet. He has to brush his hair out of his bright green eyes almost constantly because it's so long. He isn't as small as Holden is, and he is a bit stronger, but his longer legs let him run farther and faster. He is ambidextrous, and with that he can switch up his handwriting - an essential skill for his trade. He can easily adopt an English accent with absolutely no hint of his Irish roots, also another useful skill. His taste in clothes is merely a product of the times, though, like Holden, he wears a black coat almost everywhere he goes.

overall personality~ 200+ words
Espen is a more mature than the average twenty-one year old. He and Holden have been taking care of their schizophrenic mother for the past ten years, and it's given him the gift of endless patience. Being the man of the house for five years has made him grow up before his years. He is a master of manipulation, though he'll only use his skills if he's going to pull a heist, and then he'd have Holden by his side. He's incredibly protective of both Holden and his mother, and won't have anyone talk badly about them.
He truly cares for his remaining family, as he did his father, and the wounds in his heart are still healing. He is usually calm, cool and collected, though if one brings up the subject of family, his composure would break. He would do anything for his family, and anyone he considers a true friend. He isn't all that keen on giving out his trust, and if you break it, he won't be merciful, but if you have it and keep it, he'll treat you with the same compassion he does Holden and his mother.
He feels that, at heart, he and Holden are good people. They haven't hurt anyone with their stealing, and they aren't about to let their mother suffer longer than she absolutely has to. He hates that she's had to go on for ten years like she has. He feels sort of guilty that he'd brought Holden into the thievery business, but he thinks it's the only way he could have had the money to help his mother. He still works, actually, playing guitar, piano and violin as accompaniment to Holden's entire range of instruments in theaters.

history~ 400+ words
Born to Alasdair and Eirinn Darnell in the heat of a mid-July day, Espen was one of the few high points in his parents' lives. He had a typical upbringing, with a bit of sibling rivalry when his brother Holden was born three years later. It went a bit past rivalry, however, when Espen started to get physically violent with his little brother. He thought his parents didn't love him anymore because they loved Holden so much. It took him a while to get over that, but because of it, their bond was tied so much tighter.
For the next few years, Alasdair worked, Eirinn stayed at home with the two boys, and Espen and Holden grew closer and closer to each other. Everything was perfect, until the day that Eirinn started acting weird. It started with her visions. She would see things that no one else could. Then, it was as if they were talking to her. She would talk back to them. These episodes were few and far between at first, but as the months rolled on, Eirinn's mental state deteriorated so much that she could barely recognize her family.
Alarmed by this, Holden tried to slow down the progression of her symptoms while Espen went out and got a job working with his father. It was there that Espen learned many things that he could later put to use as a thief. Holden stayed with his mother constantly, helping her do everything she needed to do to survive. Alasdair also started to teach Espen how to play guitar, and when Holden walked in on them and wanted to learn, their father gave Holden a flute. Holden absolutely fell in love with the flute, and he experimented with many other instruments around this time, including the pan flute and clarinet.
As time went by, Alasdair and Espen, Holden joining them later after he'd gotten a job, were setting more and more money aside for Eirinn, just in case something happened to him. Alasdair's fears came true a few years later, Espen being only 16, when he was killed. Espen and Holden never found out how exactly their father had died, as they were confronted with the cold facts of their life: they needed to support their mother. Espen didn't know if what she had could be cured, but they would try.
First, they had to move her. Getting her out of Tuam and someplace that could help her was going to be harder than it sounded, but it wasn't completely impossible. Espen came up with the plan to take her to Dublin, and if she couldn't be helped there, they would take her to London. There was bound to be someone there who could help. Espen and Holden took the money they had saved up with them, buying two horses and a buggy. They loaded everything they needed into the buggy, lashed one of the horses to it and started off.
Holden drove the buggy while Espen rode next to it, a pistol strapped to his leg, just in case. From Tuam, they went south to Galway. They stayed in Galway for a couple of days, as Eirinn hadn't been doing so well on the road. After Galway, they headed east, through Loughrea and Ballinasloe, and they ended up in Athlone. Going a bit northeast this time, they stopped in Mullingar for a bit of rest, then started out the next day for Maynooth. After Maynooth came Dublin, the hopeful end of their quest.
In Dublin, they checked everywhere, but couldn't find anyone who would give them any clue as to what their mother suffered from. They weren't to be deterred, however, as they could still go to London. They used their musical prowess in Dublin to work for some extra money so buy passage on a ship to Liverpool, England.
Arriving in Liverpool, they crossed through town after town, and they realized that they would have to do something more to keep up with their mother. Eirinn's condition was deteriorating fast, and she couldn't even tell them what was wrong with her anymore. Her speech was getting so disjointed that they couldn't make sense of it. The brothers were getting even more worried about her, and they needed to find someone to help. Fast.
In Chester, the first major stop after Liverpool, Espen was looking around for someone that could point them in the right direction when he stumbled upon a ball of sorts. Curious, he spied on the party goers and managed to spot a couple of pickpocketers working their magic on the crowded floor. Their trade looked so easy, and no one ever noticed. Intrigued, he set out to try it himself. At first, he picked out easy targets, and the miniature heist went off without a hitch.
Everything got kicked up a notch when, reaching into an intoxicated woman's purse, he lifted an intricate diamond necklace that had to have cost hundreds. He quickly ran away, the necklace still in his possession, and he realized just what they could do to help their mother. Stealing from the rich people wouldn't hurt them; they could just go out and buy another one of whatever had been stolen. Going back to Holden, he related his plan. Holden wasn't so sure about it, but after the next few days, he accepted it.
Now that they had a purpose, they could hone their skills and make sure that their mother was going to be alright. The two pillaged the rich people in the towns they passed through, and when they got to London, they sold the entire collection they had acquired. It made them quite a lot of money, and they put it to use, trying to find someone to help their mother.
After many false leads and years wasted, Espen's twenty-first birthday has come and gone, and Holden has turned eighteen. Eirinn's state has only worsened, and she's teetering on the brink of a vegetative state. Keeping her hidden within their home, Espen and Holden can only hope that they can find her help before it's too late.

rp sample~ 100+ words
He'd been staring out the window for the longest time. It usually meant that something was on his mind, but this time, he really just wanted to forget it. Espen's mother, Eirinn, was getting worse and worse, and no one knew how to help her. His brother, Holden, would stay with her most of the time, but he wasn't there now, and she couldn't hang on. She was slowly sinking into that vegetative state from which they couldn't call her back.
The tension was growing in their little house as worries heightened. He didn't want to think about it, but the thoughts just kept coming. No one knew what was wrong. No one could help. She was going to die like this. All the money in the world couldn't help her if there wasn't anyone who knew how to. Espen forcibly shook those thoughts from his consciousness, annoyed with himself. He wouldn't give up; he couldn't. As long as Eirinn still lived, there was hope. And no matter what, he would help her. They would.
