general appearance~ A petite girl, Rukia is very fine-boned and graceful, but her strength comes from sheer stubbornness rather than muscle. Her hair hangs to her waist with longer bangs that are swept to the side; when encouraged to do so she can put it up into a more typical Japanese style- usually for a performance. Large eyes peer out from an almost innocent face that it is made a bit more expressive for the intelligent look in her gaze. Though usually brown her illness has caused the slightest red refraction in her irises and she wears her clothing to hide how thin she's grown. When going to school she keeps to the poor Victorian clothing she's expected to; on the streets performing she wears what is considered 'ninja clothing' by the masses or a dancing gown, depending on the situation.

overall personality~Even though her face brings to mind a certain young sweetness, Rukia is far from an easy girl to understand. Her mind is like a sponge, quickly absorbing and accounting for whatever information she is presented with, and the fitting into the appropriate response- but at the same time she is very set in her ways. Her perception of the world was very much shaped by her younger life and there has been little to happen that motivates her to view humanity in a better like. This leads her to be suspicious of everyone who is not her brother or sister, and that suspiciousness takes a very long time to wear off.
Those who are lucky enough to be trusted by her see her true depth. Amazingly protective of her younger sister, she also tends to nudge Hakumei toward what she thinks is best for him and the entire family. Her sense of humor is a bit dry and rarely seen, but she has a talent for sarcasm, and when she smiles it's particularly bright for its rarity. She has a bit of a scholarly bent as well, using a bit of her pocket money to buy the cheapest used books that are available. Another portion goes to toys for Aisa or the food they eat, which she cooks very often. There are a few different pieces of art in Japanese around the house that she has made, and secretly she is fond of gifts and lovely things. It's one of the few things that breaks through her shyness. While reserved she is terribly polite, even to strangers, though she avoids speaking to them unless forced to, and will drop the polite act once they seem to be a threat.

history~ Even in these modern Victorian days and the Empire of Japan thriving there are still bad things happening- Rukia's young life was a very good indication of this. Born to a mother who variated between smothering affection and complete apathy, and to a father who never looked at her at all except to coldly express in his features her lack of importance she could have ended up very badly indeed. Luckily, she had a guardian of sorts in her elder brother, Hakumei. From her earliest memories he was the only safe constant and she clung to him, at times even resisting his own wishes that she grow up independant. Her rare smiles were only to try and draw similar ones from him and she laughed for the same reason.
Life didn't get any better with time. All of her efforts were restrained to playing or helping while their father worked or was out- or had passed out from whatever alcohol or opium he'd found. Other than that she sat quietly in her room, waiting and trying to be as inconspicuous as possible. This taught her a great deal of patience, but at the same time filled her with rage for reasons she couldn't understand. The only peace seemed to come when her father's brother Iroh visited, bringing with him a small bit of cheer and calm, because Father hated to make him angry. Iroh was his means of money and support when everything else failed. Secretly their uncle taught Haku to fight, and he taught it to Rukia- only to be surprised and pleased when she quickly matched him. Anything he taught her she seemed able to do easily.
When she was about nine their mother gave birth again, to another girl- and immediately she saw that things were going to be the same way. That steeled her determination and she took over looking after the girl. Using her memories of Haku's actions toward her she tried her best to see to Aisa's every whim. Unfortunately that caused the youngest Kino child to be something of a pampered girl, and Rukia is having a hard time weaning her of it.
One day their father killed their mother. She didn't remember much of the details, but there was a great deal of terror and noise and after that it got even worse. The rare affection of Sai disappeared completely and a lean time began. Haku was hurt more often, increasing Rukia's inner rage. Then the fateful day that they gathered what small things they could and left, Aisa bundled in Rukia's arms and Haku in great pain. Uncle helped again and they got on a ship, bound for a better place and where their father couldn't reach them. During the long trip there was a great deal of filth, disease and little food, but she made sure Aisa made it through just fine, and Haku as well. Unfortunately, she didn't notice the tick lodged into her skin until it was too late, and after that her illness began to develop steadily. It's been hidden ever since she realized she was sick.
Once in London her brother found a place and sent herself and her sister to school, but she refused to be complacent otherwise. Her ambition and personal drive pushes her to succeed at everything, and unable to see Haku work himself to death for their survival she works as much as she can between school days, either throwing knives or dancing to what her brother plays. She also keeps track of the laundry and keeps the meals cooked, and intends to find a way for all of them to get ahead.
``east wind~
rp sample~ This noisy, smoky city- as much as she'd hated her home for the fact her father was in it, the quiet had been very nice. Here it seemed like there was a fear of silence that pushed everything toward having an aspect of noise; engines rattled, whistles blew, people shouted and the cacophony seeped into every corner, leaving nowhere peaceful. With a small frown she tucked a piece of hair into the bun at the back of her head and then starting tucking kunai and shuriken into her belt and the sheathes in her sleeves until she was wearing enough weaponry to be dangerous- but none of it would be noticed. Her hood went over her head and she checked in on Aisa and one of the kind older ladies who looked after her while they worked; her little sister, spoiled but sweet, and the spirit of their little family. Smiling behind her hod Rukia stepped out and started down the stairs toward where Haku performed. Perhaps there would be enough today to buy that tuppence copy of Macbeth she'd been eying...
anything else~Rukia is suffering from a prolonged case of Lyme disease that was never treated. This causes changes in vision, seizures, paranoia, nausea, chills, joing pain and weakening of the heart.
